Battle Island State Park

Named for a 1756 French and Indian War skirmish on the Oswego River, which runs beside the course and opens up views from several fairways and greens.

About Battle Island State Park

Battle Island is New York State Parks' course on the Oswego River just outside Fulton, and the river is the reason to play it: the course runs alongside it, with views of the water from a number of fairways and greens. It's 18 holes and about 5,973 yards, so it's more about position than power, and it's busy, with nearly 20,000 rounds played in 2023 according to Oswego County Business.

The name goes back to July 3, 1756. Early in the French and Indian War, a British supply convoy under John Bradstreet, rowing back from the forts at Oswego, was ambushed by French and Native forces, and the fight was on and around an island in the river that is now nearly submerged. The local historian calls it a skirmish of maybe three hours. A plaque at the park marks it.

Frederick A. Emerick owned most of the land and deeded it to the state in 1916. Oswego County Business says he designed the course in 1936, and the rest of the land went over in 1938, when Battle Island officially became a state park. In winter it's used for cross-country skiing.
