About James Baird State Park Golf Course
James Baird is a state park course on farmland that belonged to James Baird, the engineer whose firm built the Lincoln Memorial. He gave the 590 acres to New York in 1939 on the condition the park carry his name. Work started in 1940, went on and off through World War II, and the course officially opened in 1948 to a Robert Trent Jones design.
The park describes it as scenic and fairly flat, so the ground itself won't wear you out. The trouble is the trees and the sand. The OpenStreetMap survey shows 14 of the 18 holes lined with trees, water near nine of them and about 43 bunkers, but no big elevation swings. The 4th is the only par 5 on the front nine, with out of bounds along the right-side woodline from tee to green and deep bunkers around the green.
