About Tatanka Golf Club at Featherhill
Tatanka is the Lakota word for buffalo, and here it isn't just a name. The Santee Sioux Nation's Ohiya Casino Resort commissioned Paul Albanese to build its first golf course, and buffalo roam in fenced pastures right next to some holes. Albanese has said you can hit a tee shot with a buffalo 20 feet away. The course was seeded for a 2015 opening.
The land is rolling hills and ridges, with views that run 30 to 40 miles across the prairie. Every hole has some elevation change, and the map survey measures about 114 feet of it across the property, with only one hole near water around 63 bunkers, and only five holes lined by trees. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
Albanese and his crew learned the local stories and built holes around them, subtly: one has a spirit bunker shaped after a spiritual story. The yardage sign at each tee tells you what inspired the hole, so read them. Expect a few surprises too, including a shared fairway and a shared green with two pins on it. There's a big range with free range balls, a large putting green, a pro shop and a kitchen.
It's one of 12 courses Yoink watches in the Norfolk & Northeast Nebraska area, and the closest alternative is Crofton Lakeview Golf Course, about 22 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
