About Wild Horse Golf Club
Wild Horse is what happens when a small town wants a better course than its old nine-holer and asks the right people. Dick Youngscap, who owns Sand Hills, pointed the Gothenburg golfers to Dave Axland and Dan Proctor, shapers who had built many of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw's courses. It opened in 1999, and LINKS Magazine reports it cost just $1.35 million including the clubhouse, paid for by selling 500 shares at $1,000 each and about 50 home lots.
It plays like a Sand Hills course. Fairways run through valleys between native grass hills, big blowout bunkers sit where you want to aim, and there are pot bunkers down the middle of the 3rd. The wind is the other hazard: the course's own notes are full of holes that play downwind, like the short par-5 14th with its 80-yard-wide fairway, and holes that play back into it, like the long par-3 13th. The greens have plenty of mounds and slope, so expect to putt over humps.
The tips are rated 73.9 with a 140 slope, and there are six sets of tees, so pick carefully. The Pony, a short course next to it, has no tee times, is walking only and is free for juniors, members and lodging guests, and the club has lodging for stay-and-play trips.
It's one of 14 courses Yoink watches in the Kearney & Central Nebraska area, and the closest alternative is Lake Maloney Golf Club, about 35 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
