About Fairmont Hot Springs Resort
This is the golf course at the hot springs resort in southwest Montana, and it plays at altitude: the resort says the 5th green sits a mile high. It's a par 72 of 6,741 yards on 150 acres, with five ponds and a fountain pond on the 18th, so there is water waiting on the last hole.
Two holes do the talking. The 5th, which the resort calls "mile high, mile-long," stretches 649 yards, one of the longest par 5s in the state. The 3rd has what the resort bills as Montana's largest green, three tiers and 10,000 square feet, so hitting it and two-putting it are separate problems.
The ground has a long past. George and Eli Gregson bought the springs in 1869 for $60, and Gregson Hot Springs ran for more than a century, including the 1912 miners' picnic where 14,000 people showed up and a brawl broke out between Butte miners and Anaconda smeltermen. The old resort closed in 1971, and the plan for the new complex that year included an 18-hole golf course. Lloyd Wilder of Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia, took over in 1972.
