About Rich Spring Golf Club

Rich Spring is the Cold Spring area's first golf course, and the history page is worth reading. In 1960 golfers from Richmond and Cold Spring got fed up with the sand greens on area courses and decided to build their own with grass. Thirty of them met at Dobies Resort in Richmond on May 16, 1960, picked the Janssen farm on Schneider and Great Northern lakes (land people considered worthless farmland), and sold $100 shares, raising $18,000 in under a year. The name joins the two towns.

Tim Murphy designed it, and volunteers did much of the work, raking, cutting trees, digging stumps and picking rocks by the pailful. An old barn by the lake became the first clubhouse. The course opened on May 12, 1962, with a few temporary greens, at $1.50 a round on weekdays. The back nine opened in 1982, a new clubhouse went up in 1996, and holes 1 and 18 were rebuilt to make room for a driving range.

Today it's a par 72 of 6,687 yards from the Black tees (72.9 rating, 135 slope), with lake views, water on the 6th, and a public road, Fairway Circle, that runs through the course and is out of bounds. Shady's Long Shots, open since 2019, looks out over the lake.

It's one of 17 courses Yoink watches in the St. Cloud & Central Minnesota area, and the closest alternative is River Oaks Golf Club, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
