Marquette Golf & Country Club

Mike DeVries' Greywalls runs over granite outcrops with Lake Superior in view; the club's older Heritage course has a 1926 Langford and Moreau nine.

About Marquette Golf & Country Club

Marquette Golf Club has two 18s, and most people come for Greywalls. Mike DeVries, who apprenticed with Tom Doak, built it in 2005 on rough Upper Peninsula ground: tumbling fairways, big slopes, sharp elevation changes and long views of Lake Superior. Only about 40,000 cubic yards of soil were moved and 3,000 cubic yards of rock blasted, and the holes work around the granite outcrops. Golf Digest ranked it 55th on its Top 100 Greatest Public Courses in 2025, up from 67th in 2023.

Flat lies are rare. On the 7th, a 489-yard par 4, a rock cliff cuts across the fairway and you choose between carrying it and laying up. The 15th is a 240-yard par 3 that's all carry over a ravine, and the 17th is only 137 yards but its green is split into three sections, so hitting the right one matters more than the distance. The walk up to the 5th green shows you where the course got its name.

The Heritage is the original course. William Langford and Theodore Moreau, the pair behind Lawsonia Links, laid out nine holes in 1926, and David Gill added the second nine in 1969. The front is gently rolling with inventive greens, and the back climbs into steeper slopes with Lake Superior views. The clubhouse bar and restaurant are open to the public every day.
