Highland is a member-run club west of Escanaba that has always taken public play, and it calls itself the friendliest course around. It's a fairly open course with wide fairways, so a loose driver isn't fatal, but the club has added bunkers and trees over the past several years to give better players something to think about.

It started in 1930, in the Depression, as nine holes with a clubhouse in an old wooden and stone barn. The greens were sand: you raked a path from your ball to the hole, putted, then groomed the green with a toothed rake for the next group. Grass came later. The clubhouse burned in 1933 and again in 1960, and the members rebuilt it both times.

After the second fire the members bought more land and built a second nine. It was supposed to open in early summer 1968, but a wet summer pushed it back, and on August 24, 1968, Highland became Delta County's first 18-hole course. It went on to host big tournaments and sat in the rotation for the Men's Upper Peninsula Golf Association championship. Fire gutted the clubhouse a third time on December 2, 1975, and the members rebuilt it into the building that's there now.

It's one of 15 courses Yoink watches in the Upper Peninsula area, and the closest alternative is Escanaba Country Club, about 9 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

Booking a tee time at Highland Golf Club (Upper Peninsula)

Book public tee times online from the club's website; members have their own booking link. Posted green fees are $20 to walk 18 and $37 with a cart in May, then $30 and $47 from June 1 to closing, and Mondays are $30 for 18 with a cart. The page lists 2026 memberships but doesn't date the green fees. Metal spikes aren't allowed. The clubhouse is 906-466-2791.
