About Currie - West Course
Currie West is the modern half of Midland's municipal complex. It started as a nine-hole course; in 2002 Michigan architect Jerry Mathews of Natural Golf Design redid those nine completely and carved a new front nine out of the woods between M-20 and the Tittabawassee River. From the black tees it's a 7,056-yard par 72 (74.0 rating, 131 slope), with five sets of tees down to 5,050 from the reds, so you can make it as long as you like.
It's a woods-and-water course. The mapped layout shows 14 holes lined with trees, the river or its channels along 10 holes, water on eight, and eight doglegs, so position matters more than power. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
The complex opened in 1954 and is named for Gilbert Currie, who built the original course. You finish at the West Clubhouse, whose deck (and Gil's Grill, named for him) looks over the pond on the 9th. The city hired Billy Casper Golf to manage the complex ahead of the 2014 season, and there's a par-3 course and a driving range, built in 2015 on what used to be the East course's front nine.
