Crumpin-Fox Golf Club

Roger Rulewich picked the site in 1969 for a Pine Valley-type course. It has been a U.S. Open qualifying site 13 times since 1991.

About Crumpin-Fox Golf Club

Crumpin-Fox started in 1969 with a brief to Roger Rulewich of Robert Trent Jones, Inc.: find a site for a Pine Valley-type course. He found it in Bernardston, and then it sat. Andy St. Hillaire bought the project in 1977 and built the back nine and the clubhouse; William A. Sandri bought it in 1987, Rulewich came back to build the front nine and rework the back, and the full course opened in June 1990 with bent grass fairways. The name comes from the town's old Crump Soda Company, sold to Eli Fox in 1853.

The club's own hole tour gives you the flavor. The winds off Huckle Hill make the long downhill par-3 3rd a guessing game, the 8th runs the whole way along a lake on the left, the 11th is a Redan in the North Berwick mold, and the 18th tee points you left toward a collection area of balls, rocks and trees known as The Office. Plan on a real test.

The record backs it up. Golfweek ranked it the top public-access course in Massachusetts in 2002, 2006 and 2010, Golf Magazine had it on its Top 100 You Can Play in 1997, 2002, 2006 and 2007, and Golf Advisor listed it 33rd among the toughest public courses in the U.S. in 2023. It has been a U.S. Open qualifying site 13 times from 1991 to 2025 and hosts the New England Junior Amateur from 2025 through 2027. Afterward, Zeke's Grill, named for a stray pup who moved in in 1991, has a deck looking out on the 18th green.
