Mount Pleasant Golf Course

Gus Hook's Depression-era layout hosted the Eastern Open in the 1950s. Arnold Palmer won in 1956 after hooking his first drive onto Hillen Road.

About Mount Pleasant Golf Course

Mount Pleasant is one of Baltimore's Classic Five, the city courses the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation has run since 1985. Gus Hook designed it; a model of the proposed layout was photographed in 1929, and the course was built in the early 1930s. It's par 71 and, by the 2023 scorecard, 6,726 yards from the back tees. Hillen Road runs the length of the par-5 1st, and the scorecard's local rule is blunt: a ball that crosses a paved road is out of bounds.

This is where Baltimore's tour history lives. The Eastern Open was played here from 1950 through 1958, with winners including Sam Snead, before moving to Pine Ridge for three years and coming back. In 1956 a young Arnold Palmer hooked his first tee shot of the tournament onto Hillen Road, jammed his driver back in the bag and said he quit. Doug Ford told him he could spot the field a couple of shots and still win. Palmer did, for his third PGA Tour title, and a photo of him with the trophy hangs in the Champions Grill.

On the map, 12 of the 18 holes bend and 11 are tree-lined, there are about 62 bunkers, and some holes rise or fall about 51 feet from tee to green, so position matters more than length. The 1st has two greens, left and right, that the staff rotate, and there's a short practice hole between the 17th and 18th where you can hit your own balls up to about 100 yards.
