About Crab Orchard Golf Club
Crab Orchard is a semi-private par 70 with a real golf pedigree. Roy Glenn, who had spent 12 years as a touring professional, came to Carterville in 1956, bought the 240-acre Ferrell Farm, and started building in 1957. It opened in 1959, and the rest of the farm became the Greenbriar Subdivision. The Heckel family owned it outright from 1972, and when Steve Heckel retired in fall 2020 the Brown family bought it.
Water comes into play on nine holes, big oaks line the course, the fairways are Myers Zoysia and Westwood Bermuda, and the greens are bentgrass. With five sets of tees it changes a lot depending on where you play from: the middle and forward tees are friendly, and the championship markers get much harder. There's a driving range and practice green open to the public, and a PGA professional gives lessons. It sits between Carbondale and Marion, just off IL 13 and minutes from I-57.
