About Eagle Ridge Resort - The General Course
The General is the top course at Eagle Ridge, the resort's 63-hole spread in the hills outside Galena, and it plays like nothing else in the state. The resort puts the elevation change from the first hole to the 18th at 289 feet, and the signature par-4 5th has 180 feet of elevation change from tee to green. Len Ziehm put it plainly in his piece on the course's 25th anniversary: it isn't suitable for walking, but the views are unmatched. Book a cart.
It's par 72 and 6,726 yards from the Black tees (72.8 rating, 141 slope), with Gold at 6,280, White at 5,917 and Jade at 5,238. GolfAdvisor notes that for all its ups and downs it has far fewer blind tee and approach shots than the resort's older North and South courses, so what you see is mostly what you get.
Two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North designed it with Roger Packard, son of the architect Larry Packard, and it opened in 1997. Building it took dynamite; the director of golf at the time remembered blasting to make the routing work. After Mark Klausner bought the resort in 2019 the nines were flipped, and an in-house tee program brought back two overgrown 'mystery tees' at the 6th and 8th, added a forward tee at the 5th and rebuilt the bunker in front of the 6th green with railroad ties. The resort says the course has been renovated back to its original architecture.
