About Harborside International - Starboard
Starboard is the second of Harborside's two Dick Nugent links, added in 1996, a year after Harborside opened, just minutes from the Loop. There are no trees, and that's by necessity: the site was a landfill, capped with two feet of clay dredged out of Lake Calumet, and roots aren't allowed to break that seal. What you get is open, heavily bunkered golf on bentgrass, with the skyline and the lake in view. Starboard's front nine sits on the old sanitary waste landfill.
The hole people know is the 17th, Buccaneers Cove, a par 3 that needs a middle iron to carry Lake Calumet, with the lake running up the right side and three deep bunkers on the left, so there's nowhere safe to miss. Golfweek's Best 2025 list of Illinois public-access courses has Starboard tied for 9th.
The build won top honors in the American Academy of Environmental Engineering's 1996 Superior Achievement competition. When the Champions Tour came through in 2002, Ben Crenshaw compared Harborside to Muirfield. Both courses got a $1.7 million bunker renovation in 2017, and KemperSports manages the place.
