About Harborside International - Port
Dick Nugent built both of Harborside's courses as true links, open, windswept and nearly treeless, and the Port opened in 1995. What makes it unusual is where it sits. In the early 1990s this was a landfill of sanitary district sludge and construction rubble owned by the Illinois International Port District, and it became a links course with the downtown skyline on the horizon, minutes from the Loop.
Sand is the defense. The map survey counts more than 100 bunkers and only a couple of holes with trees along them, and in 2017 Harborside finished a $1.7 million bunker renovation across both courses. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. With nothing to block it, the wind decides how long it plays.
The finish is why people come back. The 15th, the Anchor Hole, is a par 3 with an anchor-shaped fairway and a boomerang green about 100 yards end to end, and then 16, 17 and 18 run along the harbor water of Lake Calumet. In 2002 the Port hosted the SBC Senior Open, a Champions Tour event Bob Gilder won in a playoff over Hale Irwin, and Ben Crenshaw compared it to Muirfield that week.
