Riverside Golf Course

The Portneuf River ran through the original nine until the 1960s. Now it's flat and shady under big trees, and you tee off the 18th from an old bridge.

About Riverside Golf Course

Riverside is the older of Pocatello's two city courses, tucked in a protected valley on the south end of town and named for the Portneuf River along its edge. It sits nearly 500 feet lower than Highland, so its season runs longer. The ground barely moves and the trees are big and old, which is why the locals who carry their bags pick this one: the walks from green to tee are short and there's shade all the way round.

It's a par 72 of a bit over 6,300 yards, rated 69.7 with a 114 slope, with just over 6,000 yards from one tee up and a set just under 4,800. Length isn't the defense. The greens are small, and on the front nine they have real slope, so distance control matters more than driver.

The Hiskey brothers, Pete and Babe, built it. It opened in 1955 as nine holes with the river running right through them; those holes are today's back nine, and the front nine came later on a smaller parcel of ground. In the 1960s the Army Corps of Engineers moved the river as part of a flood control project, and it now runs along the railroad tracks at the northeast edge of the course. An old bridge from those days still stands by the par-3 11th, and on the double-dogleg par-5 18th you tee off from the top of it.
