Highland Golf Course

Laid out by George Von Elm, who beat Bobby Jones for the 1926 U.S. Amateur. Hillside holes, small greens, and everything breaks to the city.

About Highland Golf Course

Highland sits on Pocatello's northeast bench next to the high school that shares its name, and it's the longer, hillier of the city's two municipal courses. It's a parkland layout with mature pine, poplar and elm, bluegrass fairways and bent greens. At about 6,500 yards it isn't long, and at 4,800 feet the ball flies, so the greens do the defending.

They're modest in size and break far more than a visitor expects. The local rule is that everything breaks to the city, and following it won't get you in much trouble. There's hardly any sand: five greenside bunkers, all on the front nine, since the back nine's only one, at the 15th, was filled in during the summer of 2017. The only water is the pond in front of the tee on the uphill par-3 16th.

George Von Elm designed it. He is best known for beating Bobby Jones 2 and 1 in the 1926 U.S. Amateur at Baltusrol, and he died in May 1961 without seeing the course open in 1962. The road to the clubhouse carries his name. Highland is home to the Highland Rams, multi-time high school state champions, and it has hosted the state high school championship several times. ForeGolf has managed it and Riverside since 2000.
