About Pinecrest Golf Course
Pinecrest is the old one in Idaho Falls' city system. The city took it over from the Idaho Falls Country Club in 1934, when it was sand greens and dirt fairways, and got it made a WPA project. Work started in the summer of 1935, and by 1938 it was 18 holes of grass, the second 18-hole course in Idaho. A resident, Mel Erickson, won the naming contest, and the first head pro, George Orullian, stayed 40 years. Until the mid-1980s two men watered the whole course by hand.
It's a short, classic par 70: 6,491 yards from the Black tees on the city scorecard, with a 69.8 rating and 114 slope. Don't read the modest numbers as easy. Mike Hamblin's 62 in 1985 is still the professional record.
The history is the draw. The first Idaho Open was played here in 1941, the PGA put it on its tournament schedule in 1957, and Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Harold McSpaden and Patty Berg all came through. A 1951 Life Magazine survey called it one of the three best public courses west of the Mississippi, and in 2009 Golf Digest named it the best municipal course in Idaho and rated it the third best value in America.
