About The Lakes Golf Course At Laura S Walker
The Lakes is the golf course inside Laura S. Walker State Park, a short drive south of Waycross and very close to the Okefenokee Swamp. The holes are built around three large lakes, and the bunkers and waste areas use the site's own sand. There are no houses or roads around it, so what you hear is wind in the pines, and the lakes and the swamp bring wading birds and the occasional alligator across a fairway.
It was designed in 1995 and plays as a par 72 of 6,656 yards from the black tees, with the whites at 6,069, golds at 5,543 and reds at 4,767. Golf Digest named it the Best Municipal Golf Course in Georgia in 2009, and in 2011 it was the Hook A Kid On Golf program's Best New Site of the Year nationally. There's a 40-tee range, a golf shop and a snack bar.
The park has its own story. It was set up in the 1930s as a national park honoring Laura S. Walker, a Waycross writer and conservationist, who was the only living person to have a state or national park named for her. The WPA and the CCC did the work, and it was deeded to Georgia in 1941.
