About Bowden Golf Club
Bowden sits on Miller Field, a vacant airfield in east Macon, which tells you most of what you need to know about the terrain: it's mostly flat, sandy loam, with a small rise and fall about every five feet. Four sets of tees run from 4,940 to 6,626 yards, so it's a flat walk at a modest length. There's a full-length range, a chipping green and a putting green, and lessons by appointment.
The history is why it's on the National Register of Historic Places, listed in February 2015. When Macon's Lakeside Course closed in the mid-1930s, local pro John "Dick" Cotton and other golfers asked the city for a public course. Mayor Charles Bowden said he'd help any way except with money, which the city didn't have in the Depression. Cotton drew the layout in 1938, WPA crews built it with equipment lent by local businesses and materials paid for by subscriptions, and it opened in September 1940.
In 1961 it became the first public facility in Macon to integrate, close to a year before the city buses did. The routing has changed little since 1940, and the stone benches and pump house around the course date from about then. It still hosts the Cherry Blossom Four Ball during the Cherry Blossom Festival and the annual Macon-Middle Georgia Golf Championship.
