About Jekyll Island Great Dunes
Great Dunes is the Jekyll Island Club's old oceanfront course. Walter Travis designed it for the island's wealthy winter families, and it was his last design: he died before it officially opened in 1928. It's one of the earliest oceanfront courses on the Georgia coast and one of the few Travis courses you can still play. The island has another claim in the history books too: in the 1920s the USGA tested equipment here, including early steel-shafted clubs and standardized balls.
For years only part of it survived. Brian Ross and Jeffrey Stein restored the remaining Travis holes, folded in land from the old Oleander Course, and reopened it as a single 18 in fall 2025. The routing goes through the dunes, out to the ocean and back, and it's wide open, with maritime forest around the edges. It's also the only course in Georgia watered with brackish water.
The Jekyll Island Authority, which runs the island as a Georgia state park, operates it alongside Pine Lakes and Indian Mound. A snack shop sits at the turn, and the target pace is 4 hours 15 minutes or less.

Book online or call the Pro Shop at 912.635.2368. Windows vary by course and season but are typically 90 days out, and online tee times are nonrefundable; cancel at least 48 hours ahead. As of September 2026 the rates page lists Great Dunes at $135 for 18 with a cart and $110 walking, with a twilight rate of $100, and there's no 9-hole rate here. The course is closed Tuesdays for maintenance.
