About Bacon Park Golf Course
Bacon Park is the City of Savannah's only municipal course, and it's a Donald Ross. The city hired Ross in 1925, the course opened in late 1926 with 18 holes, and it has hosted the Savannah City Amateur for more than 50 years. John Skeadas Sr. holds the record there with six wins. It's not long, barely 6,600 yards from the back tees, but the greens slope, the fairways roll and big oaks guard the corners.
It went through a rough stretch. Ross actually routed four courses on the land in 1925; two were built and one closed in the 1940s. In the mid-1980s a third nine went in, the Ross holes were split across three nines, and six Ross greens were redesigned. After OC Welch took over management in 2014, he hired Richard Mandell of Pinehurst to put the original 18 back together from Ross's field sketches and aerial photos from 1951 and 1971, on a $2 million budget. Mandell says the work won Golf Inc.'s Renovation of the Year, Best in Class, in 2016.
What you notice on the restored holes: the greens sit low, from about 18 inches to four feet above grade, not the built-up Ross greens people picture. The sixth green is shaped like Mickey Mouse's head, and the seventh has three levels. On the low back nine Ross used big grass mounds instead of sand, with only five bunkers on the last four holes. Every hole has a name, from Getaway at the 1st to Home at the 18th. The leftover third nine became the Legends Nine, a short course with no sand bunkers and few forced carries.
