Sailfish Sands Golf Course

Ron Garl's par 72, reworked by John Sanford from 2020: tight fairways, small greens, water on nearly every hole. Carts only; the other nine runs both ways.

About Sailfish Sands Golf Course

Sailfish Sands is Martin County's course, and the Sailfish 18 is a Ron Garl par 72 that plays 6,221 yards from the back and 4,979 from the front. The county describes it plainly: tight fairways, small greens and water on nearly every hole. The 9th is the one it calls the signature, a long dogleg-right par 4 with trees right and water left squeezing the landing area. The green is receptive, though. Walking isn't allowed on the 18.

The site goes back to 1925, when the St. Lucie River Country Club opened a Langford and Moreau nine and Billy Langford hit the first ball on January 10. Martin County bought it in 1947, Ernest Smith's nine made it 18 in 1963, and Ron Garl's nines later took it to 36 holes. In 2020, with money tight and the airport's runway protection zone to clear, the county hired John Sanford to shrink and rebuild it under the Sailfish Sands name. Pieces of the old Red/White course became the Sands 9, Florida's first reversible nine, which plays clockwise as Sands Black and counter-clockwise as Sands Gold. The project won the ASGCA Environmental Excellence Award in 2021.

Beyond the course there's a grass range with Toptracer, 20 climate-controlled hitting bays, and a full restaurant and bar.
