About Patty Jewett Golf Course
Patty Jewett is the old city course 10 minutes from downtown: 27 holes, an 18 at par 72 plus a separate nine, with the Patty Jewett neighborhood's bungalows wrapped around it. You come in through a wrought-iron gate and down a narrow drive under 100-year-old trees, and Pikes Peak and the Front Range are out to the west for most of the day. The course record is 61, shot by Colin Prater on the Peak and Plains nines.
The history is the draw. Local business leaders built it in 1898 as the Town and Gown Golf Course, when this was the edge of town. William K. Jewett bought it and renamed it Colorado Springs Golf Club in 1910. His wife Patty, a golfer and tennis player, died in 1916, and in 1919 he gave the course to the city on the condition that it be open to everyone and never developed. The city calls it one of the oldest continuously operating public courses west of the Mississippi. The grounds once had grass tennis courts and a polo field too.
It's heavily used, and it pays its own way through green fees, the Bar and Grill and banquets, with no taxpayer money. There's a mat range, a short-game area and a snack bar. One rule to know before bringing the family: players have to be 10 or older.
