Poppy Hills Golf Course

Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s walk through the Del Monte Forest, rebuilt in 2014 with no rough, pine straw and sandy waste areas, and firm bentgrass greens.

About Poppy Hills Golf Course

Poppy Hills is the Northern California Golf Association's own course, and when it opened on June 1, 1986 it was the first in the U.S. owned and run by a golf association. The land had been set aside for golf by Pebble Beach founder Samuel F.B. Morse, and the NCGA bought the 164 acres in 1977 for $7,000 an acre. It was planned as the Hilltop Course; members picked the name Poppy Hills in a contest. The NCGA is headquartered here.

Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed it, and it co-hosted the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991 through 2009, plus the 1991 NCAA men's championship. Matt Gogel's 62 in the 2001 AT&T set the old course record.

The course you play now dates from Jones's own rebuild, started in March 2013 mostly to save water, which reopened on April 4, 2014. He set every hole back down at the natural level of the forest floor, softened the doglegs, rebuilt all 18 greens in bentgrass, took out the rough and put in native sandy waste areas that cut the watered turf by nearly a quarter. So it plays firm and fast: fairways run straight into pine straw and sand, and there are views of Monterey Bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains from the high spots. Jones calls it the closest you can get to playing golf in a national park.

It's one of 33 courses Yoink watches in the Central Coast area, and the closest alternative is Pacific Grove Golf Links, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
