Pacific Grove Golf Links

Two nines, two eras: H. Chandler Egan's 1932 holes in the pines, then Jack Neville's 1960 nine through the dunes under the Point Pinos Lighthouse.

About Pacific Grove Golf Links

Pacific Grove is the city's course on the northern end of the Monterey Peninsula, about five miles from Pebble Beach, and it plays like two different courses. The front nine runs out and back in a figure eight over gently rolling ground framed by Monterey and Cypress pines, with glimpses of the bay. Then you turn for home through windswept dunes by the ocean and the Point Pinos Lighthouse over the back nine. It's short, 5,727 yards from the blue tees and par 70, and it opens with back-to-back par 3s. GOLF.com's 2019 visit found deer in the dunes and noted the course usually runs about 250 tee times a day.

The back nine is the reason people know the place. Jack Neville, who laid out Pebble Beach with Douglas Grant, proposed it to the Pacific Grove Rotary Club in 1960 and let the dunes set the routing, the way the old links in Scotland and Ireland were built. It opened that same year. The map survey counts about 43 bunkers and only one hole with water, and GOLF.com places that water at the 17th, where a pond fronts the green and the tee sits just off Monterey Bay. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The front nine is older. In 1931 S.F.B. Morse of Del Monte Properties sold the land to the city for a $10 gold coin, on the condition that it be kept as a golf course for at least five years. H. Chandler Egan, who won the U.S. Amateur in 1904 and 1905 and had reworked Pebble Beach with Alister Mackenzie in 1929, designed it, and it opened on May 9, 1932. The Coast Guard deeded the lighthouse and the back nine to the city in 2006, and the city pledged to bring native and endangered plants back to the dunes.
