Morro Bay Golf Course

On a state park hillside over the estuary since 1923. Hilly and tree-lined, and the old line is every putt breaks two extra inches toward the water.

About Morro Bay Golf Course

Morro Bay Golf Course sits on a hillside inside Morro Bay State Park, with Black Hill above and the estuary and the Pacific below. San Luis Obispo County runs it. The fairways are tree-lined kikuyu, the ground is hilly enough that club selection matters, and the course's own history page says the real test is the putting. The line people repeat: every putt breaks an extra two inches toward the water, however it looks.

From the Black tees it's 6,360 yards, par 71 for men and 72 for women, so it isn't long. A 1970 newspaper article called it "Little Pebble."

It opened in 1923 as the Cabrillo Country Club, a nine designed by Quintin Miller and E. W. Murphy that is now the back nine. The state bought the land in 1934, and park warden Russell Noyes drew a second nine on paper. Pro Al Lape started building it from those plans in 1948 and finished in 1951, and the clubhouse went up using barracks from Camp San Luis Obispo. The name changed to Morro Bay Golf Course in 1957. The only redesign since was in 1987, when Robert Muir Graves turned the 15th into a dogleg.

Getting on used to be work. Before phone booking, golfers showed up at 4 a.m. to sign a list held by a volunteer waiting in a car in the parking lot. The course holds Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status, and the 19th Hole Bar and Grill in the clubhouse is open every day.
