About Dairy Creek Golf Course
Dairy Creek is San Luis Obispo County's course in the Chorro Valley, set among rolling former pastures in El Chorro Regional Park. There are no houses around it, just open ground and mountain views, and it's a pleasant walk. What's left today is a nine-hole par 36 built from three par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s, so every loop mixes short and long.
John Harbottle III designed the original 18, which opened in 1997. The course ran on recycled water from the California Men's Colony down the road; when the prison population was cut and drought hit in 2017, there wasn't enough water to keep grass on the fairways, and in 2018 the course was reduced to nine holes. Remnants of the old dairy that gave it its name still sit near No. 5, and a flock of sheep grazes the native areas.
The Fried Egg singles out the 8th, a short par 5 that starts on a ridge, drops into a valley and climbs to a green on a second ridge.
It's also the county's practice hub: a grass driving range, Toptracer bays (Swing Time), practice and chipping greens with bunkers, and the Tom Lehman Learning Center, where the Cal Poly golf teams practice and the public can too.
