About Elephant Rocks Golf Course at Williams
You're at about 7,000 feet here, under Bill Williams Mountain, and the holes wind through big stands of ponderosa pine. It's the city's course (the City of Williams owns and runs it), and it's the summer escape from the Valley heat. The two nines play differently: the original nine has tight holes, and the newer nine is longer and tougher. The map survey counts trees along 13 of the 18 holes, eight doglegs and about 28 bunkers. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
Golf started here in the 1920s with the Williams Country Club, and members and railway workers built the clubhouse in 1932. It still stands much as it was. The club stayed private until 1990, mostly on land leased from the US Forest Service. The city then brought in Gary Panks to redo the nine, renamed it for the lava rocks on either side of the entrance road that look like elephants, and reopened it in spring 1990. Panks came back in 2000 to add a second nine as part of a local development, making it 18.
Golf Advisor put it third among Arizona courses in 2024 (and in 2019), and 14th on its 2019 list of the Top 25 value courses in the U.S. The course is watered with reclaimed wastewater.
