Siren National opened in 2001 in the woods of northwest Wisconsin, 90 minutes from the Twin Cities and 55 from Hayward, near the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area. Mature pines and hardwoods line bent grass fairways, and the course says there's more than 100 feet of elevation change, with strategically placed bunkers and ponds. The landing areas are generous, the greens are large, the holes are separated from each other, and there are five sets of tees.
The quirk is the extra hole. The original 18th asked for an uphill shot over water; it was redesigned for a friendlier finish, but some golfers missed the old challenge, so the club brought it back in 2014 as a 19th, played after the 18th green. You pay for 18 and play 19, and it's there to settle ties or decide who buys. The club bills itself as Wisconsin's only 19-hole championship course.
