About Hayward Golf Course

Hayward is a public 18, par 72, in the middle of the Northwoods resort town, and it's been around since 1924. Since 2022 it's been owned by a nonprofit, the Hayward Civic Corporation, and season passholders elect the board. It's pine country: the 15th is a Northwoods dogleg that needs a straight drive, the 17th asks you to drive right of a lone Norway pine in the fairway, and the signature 14th is a par 3 of up to 195 yards that's all carry over water. The 13th got a 2.2-acre pond down the right in 2020, and the 6th, 441 yards and doglegging left with out of bounds all down the left, is the No. 1 handicap.

The history is on the course website, year by year. The club formed in May 1924, and by August the first nine, today's back nine, was ready. Walter Hagen came through in September 1925 and said nice things about the design. Grass greens went in in 1927, the course closed for World War II from 1943 to 1945, and the second nine, on 80 more acres, completed the 18 in 1971. Ken Killian reworked all 18 in 1997. On July 14, 2010, straight-line winds knocked down more than 400 trees on the front nine, and holes 5 and 8 were redesigned afterward. Bunkers and tees were redone in fall 2023. The course record since the Killian redesign is 63, by Brody Moreland in 2022.
