Sleepy Hollow Golf Club

A members' club whose roots go back to 1921 in Nitro. James Harrison laid out this Teays Valley course in 1955, and most greens tilt hard back to front.

About Sleepy Hollow Golf Club

Sleepy Hollow is a private club, and its story starts in 1921, when Nitro sports fans built the Pocatalico Golf Links on land leased from a gunpowder maker. By 1927 the club had moved to the old Dudding Farm and taken the Sleepy Hollow name. It went back to the Pocatalico site in 1938, closed during World War II in 1942, and reopened in 1946 thanks to Rutherford V. Hill and volunteers. In 1955 it bought a 280-acre Teays Valley property, and by 1990 the whole operation had moved there, with more than 450 members.

James Harrison designed the Teays Valley course in 1955. It has six sets of tees, generous fairways and big greens, but most of those greens slope hard from back to front, so staying below the hole matters. Water comes in on the approach at the long par-4 8th and off an elevated tee at the par-3 12th, and the long par-3 17th is the hardest hole relative to par. Over the years it has hosted state championships and USGA qualifiers.

Beyond golf there's a pool, two tennis courts, six pickleball courts, the 1955 Restaurant and a practice area with a range, putting green and chipping area.
