About The Arnold Palmer Signature Course At Stonewall Resort

The Palmer course at Stonewall Resort opened in the summer of 2002, laid out by Eric Larsen of Arnold Palmer Design. It starts along Stonewall Jackson Lake, a flood-control lake the Army Corps of Engineers finished in 1990, then works up and away into the foothills over about 120 acres. There's no real estate on it, just water, wetlands, woods and valley sides, and early or late in the day you'll probably share it with deer. The map survey has trees along 14 holes and water on five, and some holes rise or fall about 150 feet from tee to green. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The hole everyone remembers is the 6th, a downhill par 3 of about 166 yards across an inlet of the lake to a contoured green with deep bunkers in front. The 17th, a 455-yard par 4, gets talked about for a different reason: a big dead tree standing in the marsh between the fairway and the green. It's a par 72 with six sets of tees, and the resort asks you to pick yours by how far you drive it.

It made a quick impression. Golf Digest put it second on its America's Best New Courses list for 2003, and it made Golf Digest's America's Top 100 Public Courses in 2009. Golfweek had it on its Top 100 Resort Courses list every year from 2007 through 2018, and from 2007 to 2020, and again in 2023, Golfweek rated it the second-best course you can play in West Virginia.
