The Raven is Snowshoe's golf course, down at the bottom of the resort's Western Territory on Cheat Mountain, well below the ski village. Gary Player designed it, and it opened in 1993 as Hawthorne Valley. It's a true mountain course: some tee boxes sit more than 200 feet above the greens, and on the 4th the fairway drops about 250 feet below the tee, so let someone else hit first and watch what the wind does. It's rated 75.5 with a 142 slope from the back, which is stout.

Player built it with resort golfers in mind, according to the resort's operations VP, who told Golf West Virginia the greens run 6,000 to 7,000 square feet, there are four sets of tees, and the mounds along the edges were shaped to kick loose shots back toward the fairway. They moved less than 375,000 cubic yards of dirt to build it. The 5th, the No. 1 handicap, climbs back up the ridge with a mature tree growing in the middle of the fairway 220 yards out. The 9th is a drivable par 4 with two greens, so check where the flag is before you pick a club, and the 13th is a double dogleg par 5 where going for it in two means a 200-yard carry over water. In 2006 Golfweek ranked it the top public-access course in West Virginia, for the fifth year running.
