Pheasant Trails is the Dumas municipal course, out on Schuman Road, and it dates to the 1950s. The two nines play like different courses. The front is laid out links-style: flat fairways, younger trees, and a deep cut of rough on both sides, so on the front it's the rough that costs you, not the trees. The back is longer and more West Texas, with big established trees lining the fairways.
A creek winds through the property and comes into play on some holes. There's a driving range, a putting green and a chipping green. The course expects a round to take no more than 4 hours, and marshals may ask slow groups to pick up and move ahead.
It's a busy local course in summer, with tournaments, men's and women's leagues and a week-long kids' program. The Deuce, the sports bar and grill at the course, serves lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday and has pool tables, cornhole and karaoke on Saturday nights.
