About Henry Horton Golf Course
Henry Horton sits on part of the old estate of Henry Horton, Tennessee's governor from 1927 to 1933. The park opened in 1961 and the course, officially the Buford Ellington course, followed in 1962. Charles Graves designed it, and it was the first state park course on what became the Tennessee Golf Trail.
It's a hardwoods course. The fairways are wide, but trees and brush line them, and the routing uses rolling ground: elevated tees and greens, a few blind shots, and big multi-tiered greens that have been re-contoured and regrassed with Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda. Par is 72, and the tees run 7,060 (74.3/128), 6,604 (71.6/122) and 5,625 yards.
Golf Tennessee's writer flags the No. 1 handicap 10th, 461 yards that plunge downhill and climb back up, and the par-5 6th, where the white tees face a forced carry of more than 200 yards. There's a range, practice green, snack bar and a restaurant, and the park inn and campground are right there if you want to make a trip of it.
It's one of 39 courses Yoink watches in the Nashville area, and the closest alternative is Saddle Creek Golf Club, about 14 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
