Whittle Springs Golf Course

The city's oldest muni began as a resort course with a grand hotel. Hogan, Nelson and Finsterwald played it, and the City Amateur dates to the 1930s.

About Whittle Springs Golf Course

Whittle Springs is Knoxville's oldest municipal course, and it started as something fancier: part of a well-known resort with a grand hotel and a swimming pool. In those days Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Dow Finsterwald came through. The city took it over, and the Knoxville City Amateur has been played here since the 1930s.

It's short, 5,729 yards and par 70 from the back tees, with Champion Bermuda greens and Bermuda fairways, and at that length it's a quick round. Golf Advisor named it the No. 4 Most Improved Golf Course in the U.S. for 2018, after the city and Billy Casper Golf put work into it. There's a golf shop and a snack bar with hot dogs and beer.

It's one of 45 courses Yoink watches in the Knoxville & Chattanooga area, and the closest alternative is Beaver Brook Golf & Country Club, Inc., about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
