About Port Royal - Barony Course
Barony is one of the original golf courses on Hilton Head Island, a George W. Cobb design from the early 1960s inside Port Royal Plantation on the island's northwest shore. It's par 72 and not long: 6,507 yards from the gold tees (71.8 rating, 135 slope), down through 6,234, 5,982 and 5,473 to 5,168 from the greens. Its sister course at the club is Robber's Row.
The course's own description is accurate about where the round is won. Many holes feel open from the tee, then the approach gets harder: large Bermuda greens, thick rough and bunkers guarding the targets, so distance control matters more than power. The map survey shows a flat site, only about 12 feet of elevation, with water on 14 of the 18 holes, trees along all 18 and about 74 bunkers; most doglegs bend left. Port Royal also has a three-hole Practice Loop, a par 3, a par 4 and a par 5, for warming up, plus a driving range and the Robber's Row Grille for after.
It's one of 28 courses Yoink watches in the Hilton Head area, and Port Royal – Robber’s Row is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
What it's like to play Port Royal - Barony Course
Water is in play on 14 of the 18 holes, and you carry it on 6 of them, so bring a few extra balls. There are about 74 bunkers out there, well above average, so a good bunker game pays. 11 of the 18 holes bend, most of them to the left, which favors a draw, so position off the tee matters more than length.
