Avon Fields sits in North Avondale, right against Norwood and a few minutes from downtown, and it's the Cincinnati Recreation Commission's old classic. It's short: par 66, 4,963 yards from the back tees, with 12 par 4s, six par 3s and no par 5s at all. Don't read that as easy. The fairways roll, they're lined with trees, and the greens sit up, so the scoring comes from hitting approach shots onto raised targets rather than from length.

The history is half the appeal. The city says it was built in 1914 and became a Recreation Commission course in 1928, and Wikipedia calls it the oldest municipal course west of the Alleghenies. Who designed it is an open question: city records don't name anyone, the Donald Ross archive lists it as a Ross course, and William Langford revised it in 1925. In the 1960s, building the Norwood Lateral gave the city a reason to cut down some of the steepest hills, and the front and back nines were switched.

There's a covered driving range for warming up, a stocked pro shop, and the basics at the counter: hot dogs, soft drinks and cold beer.

Book online up to 10 days ahead at cincygolf.org, or by phone up to 7 days ahead. Online is the cheapest way; walk-up and phone bookings cost more. The rate table on the course page in 2026 lists 18 holes at $23 walking and $40 riding on weekdays, $27 and $44 on weekends, with lower senior (60 and up) rates on weekdays and after 3 p.m. on weekends.
