About Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club - Pine Needles

Pine Needles is a Donald Ross course from 1927, restored by Kyle Franz in 2017 and now stretching past 7,000 yards. Franz's brief was to bring back what Ross intended while making it work for modern equipment, and he refurbished the original features along the way. It plays through the pines: the map survey counts 17 of 18 holes as tree-lined and about 71 bunkers, with water on only three holes. It isn't flat, either; some holes rise or fall about 63 feet from tee to green. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

It's the first course in the country to host four U.S. Women's Opens: Annika Sorenstam won in 1996, Karrie Webb in 2001, Cristie Kerr in 2007 and Minjee Lee in 2022. The women's game was here from the start. The first competition after the 1928 opening was the Women's Mid-South Open, where Virginia Van Wie beat Glenna Collett on the fourth extra hole.

The Tufts family of Pinehurst backed the original resort. In 1953 Warren and Peggy Kirk Bell bought in with Julius Boros and the Cosgroves, and the Bell family has been part of it since. Peggy, an LPGA founding member, started the Golfari women's golf school here in 1959 and went into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2019. Past the range there's The Loop, a four-hole short course for resort guests with holes called The Strait, The Wee, The Gibraltar and The Postage Stamp.

It's one of 3 courses in Southern Pines on Yoink, and Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
