About Pease Golf Course
Pease is 27 holes on the old air base in Portsmouth: the original Front and Back nines, plus the Blue Course nine. The history is layered. Jack Kelly is credited with bringing golf to Portsmouth, and in 1901 the land was bought from the Charlie Hayes Dairy Farm and Alexander Findlay laid out the top nine as Portsmouth Country Club. About 90 more acres came in 1929, and a designer named Stiles did the bottom nine, which opened on Memorial Day 1931. In 1956 the Air Force took the land and it became the Pease Air Force Base Golf Course. The base closed in March 1991, the Pease Development Authority took over, and the third nine was added in 2000.
