Superior National at Lutsen

Jeffrey Brauer rebuilt the River and Canyon nines by 2018. The Poplar River cuts through, the hills are real, and Lake Superior is the backdrop.

About Superior National at Lutsen

This is North Shore golf: 27 holes between Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains, next to the Superior National Forest. The main 18 is the River nine out and the Canyon nine home, and the Mountain nine is the extra loop for a quick nine or a full 27. The Poplar River cuts through and comes into play on a few holes. On the River nine you climb on 2 through 5, drop on 6 through 8 and climb again on 9. The Canyon is valley ground with ravine ponds, the river and bending fairways, so pick your club off the tee. Carts aren't required, but the course recommends one for the hills and the walks between greens and tees.

Cook County and Grand Marais own it through their joint economic development authority. Jeffrey Brauer rebuilt the River and Canyon nines in a $4.6 million, two-phase project. The River closed in mid-summer 2013 and reopened in fall 2015. The Canyon had a soft opening in September 2017 and opened fully on June 27, 2018. Brauer added white sand bunkers, five new sets of tees, wider fairways and larger greens. Bring a camera: the course lists deer, fox, timber wolves, bald eagles and moose among the regulars. A clubhouse grill and two decks look out at the Sawtooths or the lake.
