About Brooktree Golf Course
Brooktree is Owatonna's city course, tucked along Maple Creek by the entrance to Mineral Springs Park, and the name is literal: the brook and the trees. On the map survey trees line every hole, the creek touches 11 of them, five ask for a carry over water, and there's under 50 feet between the high and low points. It exists because two local brothers, Buzz and Kennard Kaplan, wanted a course anyone could play. In 1963 the town's only golf was the crowded, members-only nine at Owatonna Country Club. The site was rough pasture, trees and thickets, with a creek meandering through and a few cattle grazing. The city signed on with the Kaplans' company on May 1, 1962. The creek wandered across what became the 8th and 9th fairways and crossed the 1st twice, so crews dug it a new channel under a DNR permit. That first nine was later joined by the Upper Nine to make 18.
It's run by the city's parks and recreation department, with the Chill-Aqui restaurant and bar in the clubhouse. Groups top out at four and singles get paired, so expect to fill out a group on busy days.
