About Ben Hawes Golf Course
Ben Hawes is really two courses in one round. The front nine was built on hilly ground and the back nine on flat ground, so the legs you need early aren't the ones you need late. From the tips it's 6,632 yards at par 71 (the ladies' par is 72), and there's a separate nine-hole par-3 course for a quick loop or a first round.
The hole the course itself calls its signature is the 2nd, a 444-yard par 4 up the fairway with out-of-bounds stakes down the left, big oak trees on the right and a ditch about 200 yards off the tee. Get through that one and the round settles down.
The course sits in Ben Hawes Park, 297.7 acres the City of Owensboro bought in 1962 and opened on Memorial Day 1964, named for Mayor Benjamin W. Hawes. The city sold the park to the Commonwealth in 1980 and it ran as a state park for three decades, which is why older listings still say Ben Hawes State Park. The city took it back in 2010. One local rule to know: the course closes for the day if the forecast high won't reach 40 degrees.
It's one of 2 courses in Owensboro on Yoink, and the closest alternative is The Pearl Club, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
