Middlesboro Country Club

Golf has been played here since at least 1889, which the club says makes it the oldest continuously played course in the U.S. It once had a 660-yard par 6.

About Middlesboro Country Club

Middlesboro was built in the late 1880s by Alexander Alan Arthur, a Scottish-born Canadian, and his British backers, who came for the iron ore in the Cumberland Mountains. The golf came with them. Nobody knows the exact year the course opened, but golf is confirmed here in 1889, when 30 men and women each paid $2 a year to belong to what was then the Kentucky Golf Club. On that basis the club calls itself the oldest continuously played course in the United States. The Town of Cumberland Gap describes it as a nine-hole course.

The boom was over by 1893, when Baring Brothers in London pulled Arthur's money, and the course was used only lightly until Judge Joe Bosworth Jr. reorganized the club in 1921. That year it had 150 members and built its first clubhouse. The course moved west in the 1920s to make room for houses (the first tee used to sit at what's now 25th Street and Worcester Avenue), and in 1924 it hosted the Kentucky State Amateur.

The hole people ask about is No. 7. For years it was a 660-yard par 6, one of the few in the country. It was shortened for flood control, and the club says few players can still reach it in two.
