About Spirit Hollow
Spirit Hollow sits on what was a 400-acre cattle ranch above the Mississippi River Valley: rolling hills, big oaks, rock outcroppings and streams. The first tee shot plunges more than 100 feet into the valley, and the ground keeps moving from there. Streams put water in play on 11 holes, and the 9th drops 80 feet to a deep, narrow green. More than 15,000 trees line the wide fairways, planted as a tribute to the owner's father. Tees, fairways and greens are all bentgrass.
It's big from the back: 7,550 yards from the Gold tees, rated 74.8 with a 134 slope. Most people will be happier at Black (6,580) or White (6,010), and Rust plays 5,053. Carts come with every round, which makes sense on this much elevation change.
Randy Winegard grew up in Burlington eyeing the ranch and bought it in 1991. He interviewed three architects, and Rick Jacobson got the job, Winegard says, because he was the only one bold enough to tell him his own routing was bad. Golfweek named it the No. 1 course you can play in Iowa every year from 2018 through 2024. It hosted the Iowa Amateur in 2002 and 2012 and the Golfweek Conference Challenge from 2011 to 2016, and the Gold-tee record of 64 is shared by five players, Champions Tour members Todd Hamilton and Jerry Smith among them.
