About Lake of the Woods Golf Course
Lake of the Woods sits inside the Champaign County Forest Preserve District's 873-acre preserve along the Sangamon River, next to the Museum of the Grand Prairie and the Mabery Gelvin Botanical Garden. Robert Bruce Harris designed it, and it opened for play in 1951. It's a par 72 of about 5,000 to 6,500 yards from four sets of tees, a manageable length, and the district says it's one of only two downstate courses certified as an Audubon sanctuary.
It's a tree-lined round: the map survey has trees along all 18 holes, water near six of them with four carries, and about 57 bunkers. A multi-year renovation redid the fairways, bunkers, ponds and tees and added paved cart paths. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
There's more than the big course. A nine-hole par 3 and FootGolf each cost $10 for the day, and there's a range and a snack bar that runs from mid-April to mid-October.
It's one of 24 courses Yoink watches in the Springfield & Champaign area, and the closest alternative is Legends Golf Course, about 9 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
