About George W. Dunne National Golf Course
Dunne National is the flagship 18 of the Cook County forest preserves, down in Oak Forest, and it plays like a serious course: bentgrass fairways and greens, tree-lined holes, and eight lakes that come into play on eleven of them. Chicago Golf Report lists it at 7,262 yards from the back and says the real test is the bunkering, with big sand around big greens, so your approach has to be accurate. The map survey backs that up with 63 bunkers, and it shows almost no elevation change, about 21 feet high to low, so it's water and sand, not hills, that decide your score. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
Dick Nugent and Ken Killian designed it, the same team behind Kemper Lakes, and it opened in 1982 as Forest Preserve National. It was renamed in 1995 for George Dunne, the Cook County Board president who pushed for a quality county course in the south suburbs. Today it's run under Forest Preserve Golf, managed by Troon's Indigo Sports, and it's certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary.
There's a lighted driving range, a full pro shop and a restaurant, and the course stays open year-round when the weather allows.
It's one of 188 courses Yoink watches in the Chicago area, and the closest alternative is Silver Lake - North Course, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
