The University of Idaho's course sits on the Palouse hills at the southwest edge of campus, below the Kibbie Dome and the Shattuck Arboretum. It's a par 72 of 6,602 yards from the back, which isn't long, but it doesn't play flat. The ground falls about 170 feet from the clubhouse to the 12th green, the fairways are terraced, and it's often breezy, so expect uneven lies and greens set both above and below you.
The two nines play differently. The front has three par 5s in open grassland and gives you your scoring chances. The back tightens into narrow parkland with two hard par 3s, and the round ends with three holes locals call Heartbreak Ridge. The newer UI Arboretum runs along and below 17 and 18, and the par-5 4th follows the grade of the old road to Pullman.
Frank James, an Englishman who'd built more than a hundred courses, laid out the first nine, which opened in 1937, then stayed on as manager, pro and Vandal golf coach; the clubhouse was named for him after he died in 1952. Bob Baldock added the second nine, and all 18 opened in August 1970. The student government ran it until the university took over in 1986. It's home to the Vandal golf teams, and the university's PGA-accredited Professional Golf Management program, launched in 2002, uses it too.
