H. Smith Richardson Golf Course

The town built it in the early 1970s on land the Vicks Chemical president contributed: big undulating greens, and high views on the back nine.

About H. Smith Richardson Golf Course

The course calls itself "Smith" for short. It is the Town of Fairfield's 18, on Morehouse Highway. It is a par 72/73 from three sets of tees, 5,311 to 6,704 yards. The course site tells you what to expect: holes that go uphill and downhill, short and long, straight and dogleg, wind to account for, and large, undulating greens that take a good read. The Fairfield Museum says the back nine has some of the highest views in town, and the course has a reputation for testing better players. Map data counts 97 bunkers and water on seven holes.

The land came from H. Smith Richardson, president of the Vicks Chemical Company. The town acquired a 271-acre tract from the family in 1966; the neighboring conservation land had been farmed since at least the 1700s. About 153 acres became the golf course and 88 became the Grace Richardson Conservation Area, named for his wife. The town built the course in the early 1970s, and First Selectman John Sullivan, who didn't play golf, hit the first ball. Mickey Homa, who had played in nine national opens and five PGA Championships, was the pro from opening day until he retired in 1995.

The town also runs the Carl Dickman Par 3 a few hundred yards from Long Island Sound, if you want something short.

It's one of 4 courses in Fairfield on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Carl Dickman Par 3, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
